What to wear to Yoga

Updated: Jan 28, 2021

If you are a complete beginner or know your Chaturanga's from your Downdog's you may want to know what to wear wear while your practising yoga.

There are so many yoga classes out there so of course you want to know what is right to wear. There really isn't a right or wrong answer but if course you probably aren't going to be wearing a short posh dress to go to yoga.

So here are a few tips to help you find the correct clothing for you to move freely around.

Depending on the type of class it is, will then depend on what to wear.

For a Hatha based class, slow gentle movements you will want some comfortable leggings, probably waist height and very easy to move around in or some Harem pants, these are more floaty based. The top can be a soft Yoga bra for support but not a running sports bra. These are slightly to restrictive for yoga. You can then either wear a floaty vest top or fitted vest top.

For something more fast flowing like Vinyasa Flow or Ashtanga Yoga, you'll want cropped leggings or full length. Try to make sure they are opaque, so your underwear doesn't show in any Downdog's or inversions 😜

A floaty top or gym top will suffice with a Yoga bra underneath again. If it's cold you can wear grippy yoga or pilates socks. These are great as they grip a lot more compared to normal socks.

If you are one for Hot Yoga (a room heated to 37 degrees or more) you'll want as little as possible on. Short shorts made of lycra, or cropped leggings. A soft yoga bra again and a floaty top or just a Yoga bra and a shorts. Make sure you've got a towel on top of your mat to catch your drops of sweat.

If you are one for Restorative Yoga, then very comfortable clothing, maybe a big jumper and comfortable socks as most of it is relaxing stretching in different asanas or poses each one lasting 5 or 10 minutes each.

Whatever you choose will be be good. Just go and enjoy your class whether it is at home or in an actual class.

I hope you find this post helpful.
