World Suicide Prevention Day 2020

Updated: Jan 27, 2021

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and this is something close to my heart. I know personally of 4 people who have all commuted suicide one being my husbands father when my husband was aged 13. He left behind a wife and 3 children. I sometimes ask Darren what his dad would think of the life we've built together, what he'd think of us as a couple, what he'd think of our children, what he'd think of as life now. I never knew him, this was way before Darren and I got together but I think I would have liked him. Darren often talks about him and says if he came back now, what would he think of all the tech we've got in the world, or how electric cars work, or just how things have moved on so much in 30 years. If you are struggling and need to talk to someone, just pick up the phone or go and see a friend, a relative or anyone you don't know. People will always listen. You are not alone. Even if you think you are, you aren't alone. You can beat this illness, you can beat the feeling that there is something better on the other side which there isn't. There are so many people who love you. You just have to trust in that they do. So please reach out and ask of help.

The World Health Organisation estimates that over 800,000 people take their own life each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds. That's a huge amount. For every life lost this represents someone’s partner, child, parent, friend or colleague. For each suicide approximately 135 people suffer intense grief or are otherwise affected. That is also a huge number.

One of my colleagues a few years ago took her own life. It shattered the whole work place and was so heart breaking to see this affect not only their family but their workplace to.

Professional people have so much pressure on their shoulders and sometimes this is all it takes for them to switch and think life is just not worth living anymore. Doctors, Veterinary surgeons, Pilots, Bankers, any professional profession which earns a lot of money. With earning money comes pressure to live the life you are creating. If you for some reason loose your job or get demoted, you still need to provide for your family, still proving you can do it but there is no money coming in and you are getting stressed. Its all to much and you want to leave this life behind. Friends, family, colleagues are all here for you, no matter what. Just reach out to them and talk. They are all here for you.
