The AI Cop-Out: Why Using ChatGPT to Break Up is Ruining Modern Dating

As a relationship coach, I’m seeing a massive shift in how people navigate the hardest parts of dating. Recently, I’ve had a couple of people ask me during my sessions about using ChatGPT or AI to end their relationships. It’s a conversation that has been bubbling under the surface for a while, people used to hire human writers to draft breakup texts, but now they are turning to artificial intelligence to do the heavy lifting.
But can an algorithm really speak from the heart? Or are we completely stripping the personal element out of human connection?
The Illusion of the Perfect Text
Personally, I don’t like it. Using AI to tell someone your feelings over text is a massive cop-out. When you use AI to draft a text, it’s not you personally coming through. It doesn’t speak your language or chat how you normally would. Your partner will likely notice the shift immediately, especially if you’ve been dating for a long time.
You shared a genuine connection with this person, and throwing it away through an automated script loses the personal touch.
It also feeds directly into the growing lack of trust in the early dating stages. People already feel like those they meet online aren't being genuine because everyone is trying to maintain a curated social media persona. If we start using AI to date and communicate, we build superficial relationships that have zero longevity. You can only keep up that fake persona for so long before the cracks begin to show, and then how are you going to explain that to your partner?
Can AI Ever Be Useful in a Breakup?
To be fair, there can be a few benefits to using AI if you approach it correctly. When we are facing a breakup, we easily get flustered, emotional, and mix up our words. AI can act like a neutral mediator to help you put your raw feelings into clear sentences, making sure you come across as thoughtful and kind rather than shouty.
However, it can easily go the other way and feel cold or accidentally generate hurtful words. If you are going to use ChatGPT, follow these guardrails:
Never Copy and Paste: Use it strictly as a private template or a starting point to organize your thoughts.
Rewrite It Entirely: Read it over and over, replacing the robotic sentences with words you would normally use.
Check the Warmth: Ensure it actually comes from the heart, rather than sounding like a corporate email.
The Right Way to End a Relationship
I know it is incredibly difficult to end things face to face, but a personal situation requires a personal touch. If you have explored every avenue, even tried couples therapy, and you still know things aren't right, it is okay to walk away. But you need to do it respectfully.
Here is the exact framework I give my clients to ensure they exit a relationship with their boundaries and integrity intact:
1. Prepare Your Words
Don't wing it. Really think about what you would like to say to end the relationship. Write it down on paper and practice it over and over until you have it clear in your mind. Preparation is key so you don’t get flustered when the emotions hit.
2. Time it Perfectly
Timing is everything, and not many people adhere to this. Do not start this conversation just as your partner has walked through the door after a long day at work, or right as they are trying to go to sleep. Pick a time when you both have space to process.
3. Do It in Person
Don’t hide behind AI, a text, an email, or a phone call. This is a very personal situation and it is best-done face to face. Being in the same room allows you to see how each other is feeling and ensures both partners' emotions are taken into consideration.
4. Talk Slowly and Stick to the Decision
Talk slowly and remain entirely respectful of their feelings. Make sure they are listening, and ask them to reflect it back to you so you know they have truly understood what you are saying. Once you make the decision to end things, stick to it. You cannot dilly-dally from "yes" to "no", that just messes with both of your minds and drags out the pain.
Over to You
Have you ever been on the receiving end of a text that felt a little too perfectly written, or have you ever been tempted to use AI to handle an uncomfortable conversation?
