Safe Sex Isn't a Luxury: How the Rising Cost of Condoms is Trapping Women in Fight-or-Flight

When we talk about the rising cost of condoms, we aren’t just talking about spending money to stay safe, we are talking about a direct threat to a woman’s ability to feel safe within her own body.
In my coaching practice, I constantly see how the financial and physical worries of sex are already mainly provided by women. From contraception and emergency protection to period products and STI testing, women are paying for it both in physical and the emotional ways just to navigate and stay safe sexual wise in their relationships.
As we are already in the cost-of-living crisis, this creates more barriers to safe sex. It shifts the power dynamic for sex entirely. What happens in reality is that when money becomes tight, it always mostly falls to the women to buy the condoms. A woman might find herself in a position where she has to negotiate safe sex when she hasn’t got much money, or she feels pressured to skip the protection entirely because a partner complains about the cost.
The Financial Fight-or-Flight: How Budget Stress Shuts Down Arousal

This financial strain puts a woman's nervous system straight into a chronic, low-level state of survival, a fight-or-flight response. When your mind is panicking about the cost of an unplanned pregnancy, an STI, or how you will afford a pregnancy when you are due on your cycle, this is where there becomes a huge strain.
Rising Cost of Condoms: | The ongoing cost-of-living crisis drives up the price of protection, turning basic sexual health into an unexpected luxury item. |
Budget Pressures Fall to Women: | Because women already bear the primary physical and emotional costs of contraception, the financial burden of purchasing condoms disproportionately lands on their shoulders. |
Skpping Protection Risks: | Faced with tight finances or a partner who complains about the expense, a woman may feel intense pressure to skip using protection entirely during intimacy. |
Panic Over STI / Pregnancy Costs: | Your mind begins to race with low-level panic about the financial and physical reality of an unplanned pregnancy, an unexpected STI, or budgeting for your cycle. |
Chronic Fight-or-Flight State: | This intense mental and financial worry triggers your survival instinct, pulling your autonomic nervous system completely out of its relaxed, parasympathetic state. |
Blood Stays in Major Organs: | To protect you emotionally under attack, your body locks down and holds its warm blood flow strictly within your vital organs, destroying your physical ability to feel pleasure or experience natural lubrication. |
The body stops feeling safe. The blood stays in the major organs to keep you alive emotionally, and the relaxed, parasympathetic state needed for genuine pleasure and connection is completely gone. Sex should feel good, but women suppress their boundaries and suffer in silence just to avoid conflict or financial worry because of this.
Access to Protection is a Fundamental Right

Safe sex should never be treated as a luxury item. If we want relationships to be the best they can be, intimacy cannot feel like a financial worry. We must protect access to protection, because a woman cannot be 100% unapologetically herself if her basic sexual safety is compromised by the rising costs of safe sex.
If there was a way for a woman to ask her partner, “Can you buy the condoms today?” and make it more of a serious conversation regarding this, then there would be less pressure on a woman to keep tabs on it.
Let's look rawly at the financial side of sex: Have you noticed the rising cost of staying safe putting a quiet strain on your relationship?
Do you find it hard to ask your partner to split the cost or handle the purchasing?
Drop your thoughts below, let's lift the silence on this topic.
